Planning for Retirement and Long Term CareFairfield County, Connecticut Elder Law AttorneyProper planning for nursing home care or assisted living ideally begins long before you or your spouse reach declining health. By preparing in advance, you will have more options to maintain a desired standard of living and preserve your estate for heirs. I am Eric Anderson, an estate planning and elder law attorney in Greenwich, Connecticut, serving southwestern Fairfield County and southern Vermont. I have practiced law for over 40 years, and provide reliable legal counsel as you make plans for long term health care. Arrange a consultation today at 203-869-0528. Elder Law and Medicaid PlanningClients with significant assets can afford to fund the high cost of private nursing home care. For clients of average means, the prohibitive cost of private care are out of reach, yet Medicaid eligibility requires that a person deplete their own assets before qualifying. I can advise clients on the tricky rules for placing assets in trust or property transfer to children far enough in advance to still qualify for Medicaid. Long Term Care InsuranceLong term care (LTC) insurance policies are expensive and vary widely in the quality of nursing home care they cover. My role as your lawyer is to (a) look at your financial structure and determine what you can afford and (b) examine the policy for hidden exclusions before you sign it. Older citizens may be better off self-insuring and spending their assets as needed on nursing care. Reverse MortgagesThe reverse mortgage has been a godsend to many retirees on limited incomes who wish to enhance their standard of living. By refinancing through a reverse mortgage, a homeowner can draw income from the equity in the house for medical care, travel, or any other purpose. I do not advise it unless the client has significant equity, but I often endorse it if the home is paid off or the remaining mortgage is less than half of the value of the property. I can sit down with you to discuss whether this is the right move at this time of your life, and I can handle the transaction for you.
